A Volunteer Reflection

"Though volunteering was a requirement for me, I am thankful for being introduced to this part of Ball State because the volunteering has helped me not only explore more of Muncie and what the city has to offer, but I have already met many organizations and plan on volunteering next semester on my free time. From my personal experience, all of the people I have worked with have been extremely friendly and accommodating and it has helped me as I adjust as a new college student. I’m glad that I became associated with SVS early on in my college career because that means that I have more time to devote to participating in my community."

Spring Fling 2012 - Liberty Village

"It was a gray and raining morning on April 21, but Liberty Village Nursing Home was still colorful and bright for Student Voluntary Services’ Spring Fling event! Several of the residents came to this event to have snacks, play bingo, make flower pens, plant small potted flowers, get their photos taken and make picture frames. Bingo was the hit of the event, but the residents also enjoyed the other activities as well. Many of them especially loved planting the small flowers for their rooms. It was a really fun event, and it was so rewarding to see how much they enjoyed us being there and spending time with them. I really liked how they would talk to us as we sat down and did the activities with them. It was fun to get to know some of the residents a little bit. It was definitely a good choice for my final one-time-event with SVS!"

24th Annual Lend A Hand Day was a major success this weekend!

From the gathering, counting and petitioning of donations in weeks and days before the event, Lend-A-Hand Day 2012 went well this year. Many local businesses were more than happy to donate items on our list, which was very encouraging. And those who were a part of these endeavors in previous years also brought some of their expertise to the table. Even up to those final minutes before 9AM, we’d heard stories about people who had been forming a line since midnight. The real-life poverty hit home for many including one of our first time volunteers. Her name was Sarah: an Art and Writing major who was assigned as a personal shopper. The registration table, shopping bags and volunteers were all in place to begin this wonderful day of service and meet many people who were in desperate need of these goods we so willingly overlook as parts of our everyday lives. One young woman in particular was less fortunate and had just lost about 100 pounds and needed some new clothes, but despite her need, she kept repeating, “I don’t need much. There are people coming after me who could use this more than I can.”
Just to be able to help that amount of people in that capacity was not only implemental, but inspiring as well. I think that everyone should have a first-hand opportunity such as this one to give back to others in their community. PC’s and GA’s alike were satisfied with the turnout but took notes to make next year even better.
